Every spring North Atlanta turns yellow. Here's how to keep that pollen outside, and what to clean first when it inevitably gets in.
If you've lived in Roswell, Alpharetta or anywhere in North Georgia for even one spring, you know the moment: you wake up and every car, porch and patio is dusted in yellow-green. Atlanta regularly posts some of the highest pollen counts in the country, and while most of it is pine pollen (too large to be the main allergy culprit), it rides in on shoes, pets, clothes and open windows and settles on everything.
The good news: with a few habits and a smart cleaning order, you can keep your home feeling fresh even at peak season.
Stop it at the door
The easiest pollen to clean is the pollen that never makes it inside. Your entryways do most of the work.
- Put a coarse outdoor mat and a soft indoor mat at every entrance you use.
- Make shoes-off the house rule from March through May.
- Wipe dogs' paws and coats with a damp towel after walks.
- Keep windows closed on high-count days and run the AC instead.
Clean from the top down
Pollen behaves like fine dust: disturb it up high and it lands on everything below. Always work top to bottom so you only clean each surface once.
- 1.Ceiling fans, light fixtures and the tops of door frames.
- 2.Window sills, tracks and blinds, where pollen collects the most.
- 3.Shelves, furniture and electronics, using a damp microfiber cloth rather than a feather duster.
- 4.Upholstery and curtains, vacuumed with a brush attachment.
- 5.Floors last, vacuumed with a HEPA filter and then damp-mopped.
Don't forget the forgotten spots
- HVAC filters: swap them more often during spring. A high-MERV filter helps.
- Air vents and returns: a quick vacuum keeps pollen from recirculating.
- Bedding: wash pillowcases and sheets weekly in hot water during peak season.
- Sliding door tracks: pollen and grit build up fast and wear the rollers.
